Switzerland Felt helmet (˜1860)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013
0474 Fire helmet from Switzerland. Actually, you can not speak of a helmet here, rather of a hat. The felt hat was already known in fire brigades of Switzerland at 1811. The fire department of Bern used at this time a felt cylinder, since 1860, a felt hat was worn at the fire department of Zurich. Other cantons such as Schaffhausen wore these also. This hat is from the fire brigade of Neuhausen near the Rhine Falls in the canton Schaffhausen. The felt helmet with attached metal cap, has a circumferential red ribbon, on the front a small brass emblem depicting a flame. Inside the helmet, a leather inner helmet and chin strap is attached, as it was also used in the former brass helmets. Already in 1865, the inadequacy of these hats in the application service and a recommendation for the fire brigades of the Canton of Bern, the felt helmet in 1920 was defined as unsuitable for the fire service. After specifying the former owner was this helmet the helmet of a Flöchtner. This man was entrusted with the task of collecting valuables on the fire place and makes this safe.
