Third Reich until 1945 Vulcanized fiber helmet (˜1943)
In this collection since: 08.10.2017
0980 Fire helmet from Germany. The helmet made of vulcanized fiber was worn between 1943 and 1950. The timing is based on the present “Reichsbetriebsnummer” (numbering system) in the inner lining. This numbering system was used from 1943 on to keep secret the names and locations of defense equipment manufacturers in World War II. The number stamped in the lining is: RB No. 0/0250/0017. The exact manufacturer can not be determined. However, the number combination 0250 stands for SO 16 Berlin. The “Reichsbetriebsnummer” should not be confused with the identification numbers of the “Reichsanstalt für Luftschutz” (air raid numbers) which existed between 1936 and 1944 (see helmet number 0703, Germany).
The helmet was replaced in the early 1950s by a successor model. See helmet number 0397, Germany.
Helmets made of vulcanized fiber have been used by the fire brigades since about 1930 (helmet number 0377, Germany). They were developed and built by Robert Lubstein under the brand name EREL. After the Second World War, the company's location was in the Soviet occupation zone in East Berlin. With the founding of the GDR, the company EREL became the company VEB Perfect. This company took over the construction and further development of these helmets. In later helmets, the production year was stamped on the leather of the inner helmet.
