United States Leatherhelmet (˜1940)
In this collection since: 09.07.2017
0950 Fire helmet from the USA. Manufacturer of the leather helmet is the company Cairns & Brothers from New York. The helmet type is called "5A New Yorker". This type of helmet was introduced by Cairns & Brothers around 1940. These helmets should replace the more expensive predecessors. The company initially had its headquarters in New York before relocating it to Clifton, New Jersey in the mid-to-late 1940s. This changed the place name on the plaque in the helmet. Here the place New York was used. Because of this, the production of this helmet must be in the beginning of the 1940s. Instead of the popular eye protection system "Bourk Eyes" this helmet had apparently a Plectron plexiglas visor. (No holes on the front brim, but on the side). The helmet was worn by the New York City Fire Department. (FDNY) A leather front shield is on the front. The red color shows the assignment to an aerial ladder. The white 77 stand for the aerial ladder 77. Under the 77, there is the personnel number of the former firefighter. The Ladder 77 is stationed together with the Engine 153 at 74, Broad Street in Staten Island.
