German Democratic Republic since 1949 until 1990 Steel helmet (˜1959)
In this collection since: 01.05.2017
0907 Steel helmet of the Army of the former GDR. The helmet shown here is not a fire helmet. But his story is very interesting though.
During the Second World War, a new steel helmet for the German Wehrmacht was developed and tested. The steel helmet used until then should be replaced because the new helmet was safer. The new model (Reichspatent No. 706467) was submitted to the Fiihrer's headquarters at the end of 1944. Although it could be demonstrated that the new helmet saved material and time, and that the helmet offered more protection for the soldiers, the new model was obviously rejected for reasons of tradition.
If the new helmet had been approved by Hitler in 1944, it would certainly have affected the German fire helmet. Because the first steel helmet, which was built in 1934 only for the fire department, based on the pattern of the army helmet, it would have been conceivable that with the introduction of a new steel helmet for the troops, the helmet fort he fire departments also would have changed.
It was in 1956 that this helm model was taken up again by the GDR and issued to the NVA as a steel helmet M56 (Gerät 604 in the internal linguistic usage).
In addition, the helmet was also worn by the civil protection unit SAGO in 1959.
