Explanation of HazMat from Wikipedia:
Dangerous goods are solids, liquids or gases that can harm people, other living things, property or the environment. They are often subject to chemical regulations. In the United States, the United Kingdom and sometimes Canada, dangerous goods are more commonly known as hazardous substances (abbreviated to HAZMAT or Hazmat). Hazmat teams are specially trained people to handle dangerous goods containing radioactive, combustible, explosive, corrosive, oxidizing, asphyxial, biohazardous, toxic, pathogenic or allergenic substances. Also included are physical conditions such as compressed gases and liquids or hot materials, including any goods containing such materials or chemicals, or may have other properties that make them hazardous under certain circumstances.

In Germany, these tasks are handled by the Environmental Protection Group, the Hazardous Substances Group and, in particular, by the ABC Group. In Germany, the firefighters are trained in dealing with these materials. They use suitable and equipped trucks for this.
