Netherlands Synthetic helmet (˜1965)
In this collection since: 22.01.2016
0749 Fire helmet from the Netherlands. The black helmet is made of fiberglass. The manufacturer is not known. The helmet, however, is similar to helmet number 0428, the Netherlands. 0428 was manufactured by the US American company FibreMetal. Whether the company has also built this helmet is not known. The helmet was used at the fire department of the city of Swalmen around 1965. Swalmen is a district of Roermond in the Dutch province of Limburg. The town lies between the river Meuse and the German frontier which is goeing parallel to it; The German neighbor is Brüggen. The shape of the helmet is rather unusual for the Netherlands. The fire brigades of the Netherlands used very long leather helmets and then helmets of German production, for example the modified German civil defense helmet (helmet 128) or a plastic helmet in the form of the former leather helmets (helmet 102/90). The helmet is very light. The inner helmet is made of leather and linen. The two wide linen bands are attached to the helmet at each side with two rivets. The leather chin strap is attached separately. The inner helmet is adjustable in size. For adjustment, a metal clip has to be inserted at the front. The thin, neck leather is attached to the inner helmet. The helm is dominated by a massive helmet comb made of aluminum. This is attached to the helmet with only two screws. At the front is the badge of the Dutch fire brigades, which was usual at this time. The firefighting badge was used in the period from about 1950 to about 1980. It consists of brass and shows a helmet, ax, rope and ladder.
From 1980 to ca.2010, a new fire badge made from sheet metal (helmet 90) or plastic badge (helmet 0073, the Netherlands) was used. Since about 2010 exists again a new badge.
