United States Synthetic helmet (˜1936)
In this collection since: 31.10.2015
0714 Fire helmet from the USA. Manufacturer is the company MSA from Pittsburgh PA. The helmet type is called Topgard (Fireman's Helmet). In 1936 he was the company's first fire helmet, which was founded on June 14, 1914, and since then has been producing helmets for mining.
The company MSA describes the development of the helmet on its history page as follows:
The helmet is similar in construction as the first Skullgard helmets for industrial workers. In the MSA Topgard helmet the material bakelite was replaced by Micarta. The new, innovative material is light but robust.
Micarta is originally a trademark of General Electric and is a fiber-plastic composite. (See Wikipedia)
The helmet was built from 1936 until the end of 1960. Starting in 1970, MSA then built a topgard model made of polycarbonate, which was used worldwide. (See helmet 0403, USA)
The light helmet has a peripheral screen which has a bead at the edge. On the top of the helmet there are 4 combs. The inner helmet is attached to the helmet shell with a cord. The company Bullard from the USA had applied this fastening technology to their helmet (see helmet 0212, South Korea). The brown neckerchief could be fastened with a zipper. The inner helmet consisted of wide nylon bands. At the backside, the helmet had a hanging eye. On the front is a leather front badge. The black shield shows a red 1, including the letters "VAFD" for the fire department.
