Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 Sheet steel helmet (˜1950)
In this collection since: 26.06.2015
0688 Fire helmet from Germany. Shape according to helmet M1943 of steel sheet, without comb. The helmet was worn from 1950 to 1960. It is the forerunner of today's fire helmet according to DIN 14940, but was built, when the DIN did not exist. See helmets 0056 and 0099, Germany. The very high arrangement of the lateral ventilation holes is striking. As a rule, these were only about one centimeter above the rivets of the inner helmet fixture. The DIN 14940 will later determine the exact height at which these perforations must be. See DIN 14940, page 3. There a drawing shows that the center of the central hole is 103mm above the helmet bottom edge. The horizontal distance between the two central holes is 50mm. Why these holes are so far up here is not clear. The type of chin strap is also unusual. The chin strap consists of two leather strips. It can not be opened. The adjustment is effected by moving the two parts in opposite directions.

A brief overview of the DIN14940:
DIN 14940 came into existence only after the Second World War. First, in February 1956 there was a pre-standard for the helmets. Then there was the 1st standard for the fire protection helmet in January 1962. At the meeting of the standards committee AA1 in May 1964 the standard sheet 14940 was adopted. Only here was the color exactly defined. Although the color was already approved in yellow-green in the first pre-standard, black helmets (in Bavaria red helmets) could still be worn. The chairman of the standards committee was the construction manager, Dipl. Ing. Seegerer.
The DIN14940 changes:
June 1954, draft
February 1956, Pre-standard
January 1962, Norm
May 1966, draft
December 1968, subsequent edition
September 1979, subsequent edition
December 1981, subsequent edition
August 1982, subsequent edition
July 1985, follow-up edition
December 1989, subsequent edition
April 1990, subsequent edition
In December 1997 DIN 14940 is replaced by EN 443. It was then called DIN EN 443 before the designation was changed to EN443
