United States Leather helmet (˜1942)
In this collection since: 08.11.2014
0638 Fire helmet from the USA. The black leather helmet was produced by Cairns & Brothers, founded in 1836. At the time of production (about 1942), the company had its headquarters in New York before it moved to Clifton, New Jersey in the middle of the 1940s. In August 2000 the company Cairns & Brothers was established in the company MSA, founded in 1914. This helmet is the little-known model 430, also known as Warbaby or Doughboy, with the Doughboy version having additional seams in each of the 4 fields. The designation is obvious, because from December 1941 to the end of the war in May 1945, the USA was in the war against Germany. The company Cairns applied the helmet as "4 comb leather helmet with drop brim". The helmet basically corresponds to the model 550 "Seamless Crown" (see helmet 758, USA), which was produced since 1943. However, the circulating screen is much flatter and the chin strap is made of leather. Special feature of this helmet is the way of manufacture. Due to the lack of leather, the design of the helmet is very simple. The helmet is made of 4 pieces of leather sewn together. At the increased seam the combs were formed. The following helmet model 550 consisted of a piece of leather. The helmets were sewn with leather-covered ribs of steel wire. The helmet have the Cairns 1941 patented and interchangeable inner lining, the so-called Sanitary Cushion Liner inserted. On the inside, a label is glued in place of the manufacturer's well-known stamp. It contains the helmet size and the manufacturing number. The helmet was worn at the East Haven Fire Brigade in Connecticut.
