German Reich until 1918 Leather helmet (˜1910)
In this collection since: 07.07.2014
0607 Fire helmet from Germany. This black leather helmet comes from the time around 1910. For details of the helmet see helmet number 487, Germany. On the front of the helmet, the badge of the national state of Hesse is attached. The name "Gehau" refers to the city where the helmet was in use. The left cockade stands for the state of Hesse. It should be white-red-white-red-white. On the right, the black-white-red cockade of the German Reich is attached. Both rosettes are without color.
From Wikipedia:
From 1918/19 to 1934 the state of Hesse was a country of the German Reich. It was created after the deposition of the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig on 9 November 1918 and the abolition of the monarchy. Just as before the Grand Duchy of Hesse, the new state consisted of two larger separate territories in Central and Southern Hesse (including Rheinhessen) as well as a series of smaller enclaves.
The addition of the state to the state was based on the democracy introduced after the end of the monarchy and was used in the same way as the term "free state" (=republic) for other states of the Weimar Republic (1918/19 to 1933).
