Protective gear of the former GDR. The equipment shown here, caps, masks, filters and badges were in use at the fire service of the former GDR. In the GDR, the fire department has been divided into the categories professional fire brigade, duty firefighters and volunteer firefighters. The fire brigade was subordinate not the municipality but the Ministry of the Interior. Volunteer fire department and duty firefighters, however, were subject to the municipalities or the operating lines.
