0591 Fire helmet from France. The black painted steel helmet was worn in the French department of Alsace. After the war of 1870/1871 Alsace was incorporated into the German Reich. From 1871 to 1918, Alsace belonged to Germany. The steel helmet shown here was used in the appropriate time. The helmet producer is unknown. The fire helmet was uniform for the region Alsace. There were differences within of an emblem on the front. This helmet was also produced by the German company C. D. Magirus Ulm. There, the helmet was available under catalog number 204. At the company Lieb, the helmet was performed under catalog number 140. Its shape corresponded to the Bavarian brass helmets at this time. The badge shows as opposed to helmet number 578 a wreath of oak leaves, but inside instead of the coat of arms of the Empire Alsace Lorraine, a sign with the initials "EL" for Alsace Lorraine. Under the coat of arms itself, there is the band with the place name "Avolsheim", today Àvelse. Avolsheim is a municipality with 726 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012) in the Bas-Rhin region Elsass in France. It is located about 12 kilometers west of Strasbourg.
