German Reich until 1918 Leather helmet (˜1915)
In this collection since: 09.03.2014
0587 Fire helmet from Germany. The leather helmet shown here, is probably one of the most built leather helmets in Germany. The helmet was created in the aftermath of the First World War. It was derived from the M15 that was used in the German army. Often, the army helmet M15 was converted into a fire helmet. The helmet has a brass comb, the eye shield is edged with brass, the lateral rosettes for attaching the chinstrap are also made of brass. A special feature is the rear brass bezel of the neck shield. the helmet was used in the period between 1915 and 1934. This helmet is a Hessian fire fighter helmet. At the front, there is the badge of the Hessian fire brigades attached. It shows on the coat of arms the Hessian lion, on the band stands "God the honor - the neighbor resisted".
On both sides of the helmet, parts of the badge of the fire police (Feuerlöschpolizei) can be seen. (See helmet 111). A placement of this badge was not provided on this leather helmets. One assumes that the firefighter belonged to the NSDAP and he fixed the insignia as a visible sign of its sentiments. Many had thereby removed the original badge as Masonic symbols or Christian slogans. Here the badge was left.
Manufacturer of the helmet is the company Hermann Schellhorn Offenbach / Main. A fire brigade equipment manufacturer.
