Netherlands Steel helmet (˜1955)
In this collection since: 02.03.2014
0581 Fire helmet from the Netherlands.
The black helmet is a helmet of British production. The helmet was called Mark IV and introduced around 1950 in the UK. He was the successor to the shallower army steel helmet Mark II, that already existed from the 1936th. The Mark IV helmet was worn in the UK in the army and the air raid. After the 2nd World War he came to the fire services. He was however quickly replaced by Cork helmets. In the Netherlands, the helmet was dominant in fire brigades from companies. The helmet was used in the period after the Second World War. The helmet is very powerful in its form. The helmet bell is very high, the side run down to the outside. The edge is circumferentially reinforced. The inside helmet is attached to the helmet shell with only one single central screw. The screw is located in the head flapper at the highest point of the helmet shell. From there, four plastic tabs running down. On this, the headband is attached. The adjustment of the head size is done by a cord with which the leather is further adjusted tightly around the headband. On the headband also the neck leather is attached. The chin strap of elastic tissue is separately attached to the helmet bell.
At the front the words "PTT - Posterijen, Telegraph en telephony" can be seen. The PTT (Dutch Posterijen, Telegraph en telephony) was the national postal and telecommunications companies in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1918 and privatized in 1989th. In 1998 the company was split into the postal area PTT Post (now TNT Post) and the telecommunications sector KPN.
