France Brass helmet (˜1875)

0578 Fire helmet from France. The brass helmet was worn in the French department of Alsace. After the war of 1870/1871 Alsace was incorporated into the German Reich. From 1871 to 1918, Alsace belonged to Germany. The brass helmet shown here, was used in the appropriate time. The helmet was produced by the German company J. G. Lieb, Biberach an der Riss. The company was founded in 1873 and in 1932 it was closed. Despite the short time, the company was a renowned, world-famous brand. On the inside of the eye shield the store brand is stamped. At the rear neck guard is a embossed with the words "Registered Trade mark". The fire helmet was uniform for the region Alsace. There were differences within of an emblem on the front. This helmets was also produced by the German company C. D. Magirus Ulm. There, the helmets was available under catalog number 204. At the company Lieb, the helmets was performed under catalog number 140. Its shape corresponded to the Bavarian brass helmets at this time. The badge shows a wreath of oak leaves. Inside this is the coat of arms of the Empire Alsace - Lorraine. The tripartite coat of arms shows the coat of arms of the three countries Oberelsass, Unterelsass (Up- and Lower Alsace) and the Duchy of Lorraine. Under the coat of arms itself, there is the band with the city name "Maursmünster" today Marmoutier. The village is located about 6km south of Saverne and 30km north- west of Strasbourg in the department of Bas-Rhin.
