France Brass helmet (˜1825)
In this collection since: 11.10.2013
0549 French fire helmet made of brass at around 1825. The helmet is from Gimécourt, a small village with about 30 inhabitants in region Meuse (French for the same river Maas) in the Lorraine region.
Today Gimécourt is served by the fire department Pierrefitte-sur-Aire. This is approximately 8 km. north of the town. As a badge, a brass shield with an eagle is attached. On the band is written: "Sapeur Pompiers de Gimécourt". In the period around 1825, the helmets were fitted with an additional, movable eye shield. On the shield, two crossed axes are embossed. The shield is, as the massive, leather-covered chin strap, attached to the side of the helmet with brass rosettes. The Rauppe on the helmet comb is made from horse hair. Firefighters wore a black Rauppe, drummers and trumpeters had a red crest. On the left side, a holder for a plumed is attached. The here inserted plume indicated the rank. Predecessor of this helmet is a simpler sheet iron helmet, which, however, already has a very distinctive helmet crest. (See helmet 496)
The moveable eye shield was worn until 1850. Then, have waived the extra visor. (See helmet 161)
