German Reich until 1918 Sheetsteel helmet (˜1918)
In this collection since: 03.03.2013
0523 The helmet shown here is not a fire helmet. But it will be presented here, because this helmet will be a role model for many generations of German helmet, especially for the German fire brigades.
The helmet M18 was produced in 1918 as a successor to M16 which was first time outputted in the I. World War 1916. (See helmet 426). Besides the M18, there was a special form, which was worn at cavalry and communications forces. The “cavalry helmet“ or also called" steel helmet with ear cut-outs ", was given out in August 1918 for the first time. It is differed only by a small thing from the steel helmet M16. The helmet had ears cut-outs at the side. The laterally vent bolts have remained. They allow ventilation beneath the helmet At the bolt a front armor plate could be mounted also. It was fastened with a leather strap behind the helmet and protected observers against snipers. Since the first world war ended three months after the introduction of the helmet, not many helmets were manufactured.
This helmet bears the post-applied badge of the German Empire (escutcheon black-white-red on the right side) and the badge of the National Socialist Motor Corps (Nationalsozialistischen Kraftfahrkorps - NSKK) on the left side. (NSKK see Wikipedia)
The helmet and the helmet shape were decisive for all subsequent helmets of the military and the fire service. The fire department tried to introduce in 1930 a speciall fire helmet which was developed specifically for the fire service. (See helmet 377). Several generations later, the German fire helmet was introduced in June 1954. He was built according to DIN14940. He was for many years the only and uniform helmet for the German fire brigades. (See helmet 17). With the introduction of plastic helmets in the 1990s, this helmet was gradually replaced. Some well-known fire helmet manufacturers have this helmet however, in the same form from plastic or in a slightly modified form, still in their range (see helmet 190, 225, 240, 287, 368)
