Ireland Cork helmet (˜1950)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013
0502 Fire helmet from Ireland. The cork helmet was built around 1950. He belongs to the second generation of cork helmets that were made in the UK. While the first generation (see helmet 416) is still strongly based on the previously customary brass helmets of the type Merryweather, this helmet comes out with a much lower and simpler comb. Through the hole in the front of the comb now occurs also air into the interior of the helmet. Manufacturer and type are not known. As material, cork has been used, which was pressed with resin. As a covering layer, a linen fabric was donated, it was painted black. The inside was covered with green-colored linen. Only later is the inside made of plastic. Cork helmets are not stable, you might think, but in fact, this combination has better penetration stiffness than any types of helmets. And it has remained so.
The helmet interior from leather is not adjustable, the inner helmet was specially made for the head size 7 (57). The chin strap of leather is wide; it can be adjusted in length. There is a badge on the front. It shows a castle in a wreath and the letters "KFSB". The coat of arms stands for the fire department from the city of Kilkenny.
