German Reich until 1918 Leather helmet (˜1890)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013
0489 Fire helmet from Germany. The leather helmet with very flat helmet bell, originated in the period around 1890. He was worn in the Bavarian area, although, in Bavaria at that time still the massive crawler helmets M1868 was worn. The helmet was created according to Prussian model. He was provided with lion head rosettes and the usual front badge of Bavaria. Unusual feature is the flat brass comb with the air vents on the front side. It is known as Rheinisch- Westfälischer Flachkamm (Rhenish-Westphalian flat comb). However, this crest was worn by firefighters in Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen. In Bavaria, this rather Prussian helmet probably came, when Bavaria becomes a member of the German Empire and the administration of Bavaria was rather Prussia friendly.
