Switzerland Sheetsteel helmet (˜1910)
In this collection since: 07.03.2013
0485 Fire helmet from Switzerland. The sheet steel helmet was worn in the period around 1910. Its shape is based on the leather helmets of this time (see Helm 484). The sheet steel helmets were a cheap alternative to brass or leather helmets, but it also was under a set of regulations. The helmets had to be painted black. The steel plate should have at least a thickness of 0.4 mm. The helmet bell had to be pressed in one piece and have a circumferential bead. Comb, eye and neck shield were soldered. Eye and neck guard had an encircling brass bezel.
Side lion head rosettes keep the chin strap. At the front, a rosette is attached. Here shape recalls the shape of a cockade. On it, there is the letter "H" for hydrants group. The helmet was worn at the fire department Waldkirch in the canton of St. Gallen.
