Belgium Cork helmet (˜1940)
In this collection since: 23.02.2013
0469 Belgian fire helmet made of cork. The helmet was produced around 1940 by the Belgian company Levior. Thus, the helmet hast to be the predecessor of the helmet number 156. The cork helmet seems to have been originally black. The inner helmet is not adjustable in size, in addition to the head rest, a 50mm wide stripe of linen, and a 70mm wide stripe of fabric are fitted from back to front. At the fabric strip the badge of the company Levior is sewn on.
The fluorescent yellow color is not typical for Belgian helmets and has been safely applied in 1965. Next untypical is the mounting possibility of a helmet light at the crest and the leather loop at the rear end. In Belgium, just the fire brigade of Liege, used such a mounting system. At the front is the brass emblem of the NSV (NSV Public Welfare or Nazi People's Welfare Association, based in Berlin). NSV was founded on April 18, 1932 by the National Socialists. The aim was to replace the previously existing, free organizations (Red Cross, workers' welfare, social welfare, Caritas) by the NSDAP imputed organization. The NSA had many social tasks, inter alia; also use in resettlement operations, relief efforts during air raids. The NSV air war action is responsible for preventive measures of the air war at risk and primarily regulated the evacuation and resettlement, as well as accommodation and food for victims, but also the recovery and securing of furniture and household goods.
The organization also acted in occupied, neutral or friendly foreign countries.
The fact that the helmet was used in Belgium is unlikely because the badge indicating the Gau Weser-Ems (Oldenburg area) in Germany.
That the helmet adduced a very moving story also shows his appearance.
Presumably, the helmet was originally used as a fire helmet in Belgium, brought as loot helmet to Germany where it was used at the NSV until after the war. Based on the luminescent color, it seems to bee, that the helmet was used then as a fire helmet until 1965. At this time, in Germany helmet gets the yellow persistantely colour.
