Synthetic helmet (˜1930)

Fire helmet from the USA. The massive helmet was built by Cairns and Brother. The type is called Commando and was assigned with the model number 720. The company Cairns and Brother produced in the years around 1930 already the first helmets from phenolic resin and brought them under the series name "Flint Flex" on the market. This series consisted of 4 helmet shapes which are all based on the traditional leather helmets. The fabric structure can be seen very clearly. This helmet from a lieutenant of Truck 2 was worn in the period between 1935 and 1960. The helmet does not require metal parts, except is the obligatory metal eye on the back. The helmet interior is made of cloth, it is not adjustable, a chin strap is not provided. Presumably, the helmet was made suitable for the head size. On the front side, there is a leather front plate with the rank marking "Lieutenant," the vehicle "T2" and the fire station "BFD" where FD stands for Fire Department. |
