The helmet shown here is not a fireman's helmet. He is presented here because this helmet will be a model for many generations of German helmet, especially the German fire helmet.
The helmet was developed in 1916 by the German army and issued to soldiers at war because the hitherto customary leather military helmet (helmet 9/267/294) in the grave battles of World War I offered no protection. The helmet was given the name M16. It was introduced in April 1916. Its most striking characters are laterally projecting from the helmet bowl ventilation bolt through which a ventilation under the helmet was possible. On the bolts could be a front armor plate mounted. It was fastened with a strap behind the helmet and served observers for protection against snipers. The helmet and the helmet shape was highly significant for all subsequent helmets of the military and the fire service. The firebrigade tried in the 1930s to introduce a helmet developed specifically for the fire service. (see helmet 377). Several generations later, the German firefighter helmet was introduced in June 1954, according to DIN14940. He was for many years the only and uniform helmet of the German fire brigades. (see helmet 17). Since the introduction of the plastic helmets in the 1990s although this helmet was gradually replaced, some well-known fire helmet manufacturers have, however, the helmet in the same form of plastic or in a slightly modified form still in their range.
