Weimar Republic until 1933 Vulcanfibre helmet (˜1930)
In this collection since: 06.03.2011
0377 Fire helmet from Germany around 1930.
In the 1930s, attempts were made to revise the existing steel helmets from the German army wich exist since 1916.
In this context, the fire brigades also attempts to introduce the leather helmets against the example of army helmets.
From this time exists helmets from different materials like leather, vulcanized fiber, bakelite or alloy in the form of army helmets, which were built for the Fire Services, Dortmund and Berlin for testing.
In practical use, the helmets made of bakelite or vulcanized fibercould not convincing. For this reason, an Act dated 06.02.1934 prescribed to created new helmets from leather or metal in steel helmet shape. The helmets had to be black, must have a chin strap made of leather and a leather button-on neck. Only a few months after this regulation were still approved helmets exclusively made of metal or alloy. (See Helm 48). The patch insignia (emblem) on the helmet accordes to the Regulation of April 1933. They show at the right side the colors black - white - red for the German Empire and left the color black - white for Prussia.
The black helmet is almost as heavy as the steel helmets of this time. The surface of the helmet is painted inside and outside. To protect, the edge was provided with an enclosure made of brass, on the right side you can see the edge protectors are marked with "DRGM". The interior leather helmet was attached by 5 points on the helmet bell. The chin strap has a leather two-point attachment, a leather neck could be buttoned in five leather straps. The head flapper is very massive, it fills almost the entire area above the inner helmet. At the head baffle the badge of the company Robert Lubstein Berlin is attached. Here is to read: "Patend registered ". The stamp, mounted on the inner helmet showes as follows: Ges Gesch. Make - EREL - Berlin - FIBER HELMET. EREL was a trademark of Robert Lubstein. The aluminum ridge is narrower, the mounting flange smaller than in the later-produced helmets No.: 6 and 49. At the front there is a brass badge. It shows a fire helmet and two crossed axes.
