United States Leather helmet (˜1975)
In this collection since: 10.02.2008
0331 Fireman's helmet from the United States. The black leather helmet was worn at the Squad 2 on the Fire Department in the city of Chicago. Manufacturer of the legendary helmet of model N5A New Yorker is the Cairns & Brothers Company from Clifton, New Jersey. Originally this model was developed and built for the FDNY, the fire department of New York. The FDNY used today as a successor the Helm No: 333, the Morning Pride Ben Franklin II out of fiberglass.
The leather helmet was manufactured in 1975 for the Captain of the Squad 2. He was largely manufactured by hand and adapted to the head size of the wearer. Therefore, these helmets have no head size adjustment. Underneath the front, the Bourke safe Eye Shield, a folding eye protection is appropriate. The Bourke Eye Shild is a patent of Cairns & Brothers. The simple neck guard is placed inside and was so worn. The chin strap made of cotton has no closure, only a length adjustment. The rear part of the helmet has been strong in the neck bent down, and seems rather unusual for the original style of this helmet. The 15cm high, white leather front, produced by Paul Conway Shields, describes the affiliation of the firefighter and his rank. The Unity Squad 2 is housed along with Engine 91 to the intersection of Diversey and Pulaski.
Here are some data from the Chicago Fire Department:
Founded: August 1858 - Employees: 4314 firefighters and 619 paramedics - 98 stations - 96 fire engines - 4 Squad. Head of the Department is Commissioner Raymond Orozco (in 2009)
