Portugal Synthetic helmet (˜1950)
In this collection since: 25.05.2006
0266 Fire helmet from the Portuguese capital Lisbon. The black glass fiber helmet was worn at the professional fire department Lisbon. He is successor of the leather helmets, this one was in use to approx. 1950. The helmet bears the badge of the professional fire department Lisbon. Only the 5 professional fire departments of Portugal have badges of their own, all other fire departments bear the uniform badge to which one the place name is added. See helmet no.: 265. The helmet has a flat, broad comb which is perforated for the ventilating of the inside in front. A brass track is appropriate at the transition of helmet bell to forehead and neck umbrella, cockades at the side are fastened on this. The thread with which the inside helmet is fastened to the helmet bell hides under this track. The eye umbrella is edged to about the half with a brass track. The inside helmet seems newly, the chinstrap made of black leather, however, already seems to be older. These helmets were possibly repaired again and again. At the comb, there is a perforation by which a parade cord is drawn through. The one meter long, red cord, is provided with two tassles at the end. Different synthetic material helmets are worn in Portugal today (2006). One finds all possible colors and brands. In Lisbon they use the Rosenbauer Heros, in black colour for firefighters, in white for officers.

Question: Was the cord weared around the neck or was the cord wrapped over the helmet at parades? How has this cord held then?
