Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 Synthetic helmet (˜1979)
In this collection since: 23.04.2006
0262 German civilian safety helmet as a successor of the German air safety helmet (see no.: 8 and 61). The usual air safety helmets were further used after the 2nd World War. Then the same helmet from Glass fiber amplified polyester resin, was obtained till 1966. Due to bad resistance Polycarbonat was then used. The development of the new civilian safety helmet started in 1971, because the old helmet did not passing the new examination. The new helmet leisure of the DIN 4840 just like a number of other regulations sufficing. The most important demands were: On the outside smooth form without vertical and horizontal areas, Ground plan after the fire department helmet DIN 14940, Firm temples and neck guard, Assembly possibility of a helmet light, electrical shock resistance to 1000 V, face protection that can be lowered, chinstrap self-opening in case of a strong force, good and simple demountability by hand for replacing faulty parts as well as storability of 15 years. Two prototypes then have been developed between 1972 and 1974.
Despite suitability certificate of the air base fire department Manching, weren't these helmets produced because they reminded of the NVA helmets ( NVA ist he army of the GDR ) M56 of the German Demokratic Republik too much. The development companies got out of the project till another company continued the project in 1979. The helmet is from the company "Voss", article no.: 803 471. After the identification inside helmet the helmet was manufactured 1981. The size 2 is suitable for head sizes between 53 and 61.
The one trafficking face protection (Article no.: 842 200) to the protection of the eyes, which one is missing at helmet number 157, is there here! The visor doesn't consist of Plexiglass but from a very fine metal lattice. The visor has the same form as the front of the helmet. The visor can be slid by two tracks which ones are fastened to the inside helmet. By the short tracks, pulling out the visor is very wobbly. Inside are besides the marks of the company Schuberth, also markings of GS "checked safety" and a stamp of the Berufsgenossenschaft, a german organisation for halth and safety in profession. Of the helmets there were two variants: with and without the extendible flame protection visor. The variant with the metal visor was designed for the fire protection service in the ZS (Civil Defense), the variant considerably more frequently appearing without the installation visor was provided, however, for all other services in the ZS.
The company Voss writes about this helmet:
The safety helmet is the civilian safety helmet for the Federal Office of civil defense. The form was developed by our company founder Hans Voss 1944 as a follow-up helmet for the armed forces, however, didn't come to use any more. The Russians stole the drawing after the war and designed the People's Army helmet modified easily for the GDR. The original helmet was built for the Federal Office of civil defense in 1979. Only some 10 thousand pieces altogether were, however, established by the end of the eighties till the Federal Office of civil defense was closed. The wire protective barrier was developed and produced in little series, however, was not wished and therefore adjusted already early again by the user at long last.
Since 1990 this helmet is in larger quantities in Singapore at the civil defense SCDF in use.
The SCDF (Civil Defence Force) in Singapore is both fire department and rescue service and technical relief organization. The departments of the fire department are equipped with the modern helmets CGF Gallet, the departments of the technical help, wear these helmets.
