Leather helmet (˜1897)
In this collection since: 18.09.2002 |
0139 |
Berlin Normal cap after 1897 with 71/2 cm of a broad front umbrella, neck leather sewn on, red patent leather federation strap, head cushion built-in and Coat of arms star on wich "SUUM CUIQUE" stands. Friedrich I., king of Prussia, chose the motto."Suum Cuique" as an inscription for many medallions and coins and to the motto for the "Medal of the Prussian eagle", donated on 1-17-1701. "Suum Cuique" remained Prussia's motto since this time. This helmet doesn't have lateral cockades, for this at the front decorates a "8" of brass the red ribbon. The number 8 is presumable assigning to a fire station, what would mean that this helmet comes from a larger, North German town, because these helmets were worn only in North Germany (in the past mostly Prussian). The Berlin cap was established for Germany in Ulm by the company Magirus and was worn till 1930 by the most professional fire departments. There aren't further stamps or references to manufacturers. See also helmet no.: 129.
Question: What does the 8 mean?
