German Reich until 1918 Metal helmet (˜1870)
In this collection since: 09.03.2001
0050 German FW helmet from steel sheet black with brass comb on a broad, riveted flange and signpost edging made of brass, Württemberg form at 1870 with cooling holes.
At the side on the outside rosette storm ribbon with buckle attached.
The emblem points in a shield two "F" being at backs. About this a helmet. Going through a hook ladder horizontally with crossed ax and entry hook. Under this the text "Gut Wehr - good defense".
The helmet could be from a gymnast fire department. Gymnast fire departments were the first organized fire departments in Germany. There also is the version that "F" stands for the royal house "Fürstenberg" Donaueschingen.
Alternative to the expensive brass helmets, or because of the material scarcity at 1915.
The metal quality rather indicates to the last.
